Update on Shorty the Dog and Question

she's home, but weak and thin! Need to get her strong! Don't want to lose her! Any advice for caring for a animal after surgery?

If any of you have suggestions on caring for a very weak, elderly dog following surgery, please advise! Mahalo!

Great news that you puppy is home...he will improve just by being back with you!

Trying to think of a few helpful things. There is a medication called mirtazapine which is quite helpful with nausea and stimulating the appetite. Look it up and ask your vet tomorrow.

Feed him small meals...easy to digest proteins....Greek yogurt, boiled chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, brown rice...oatmeal.

If his stools are loose or he is constipated, canned pumpkin regulates. Just a teaspoon or so at a time. Look for canned pumpkin, not canned pumpkin pie.

I am sure he will sleep a lot as his body heals.

I, too, would imagine Shorty may nap and rest a lot but that is certainly when healing occurs and strength is restored.
Also, being back home with you!
I wonder if there are any nutritional supplements your vet may recommend at this time, too?

I am dealing with a somewhat similar situation and this is a way to increase appetite, put on weight without changing from the foods a dog is used to and likes. It has all kinds of good stuff in it in a powder form. You will find other info on other sites on it too. I learned this from a pet store owner who works with holistic vets.

In Your infinite wisdom, Lord God,
when You created the Universe
You blessed us with all living creatures.
We especially thank You for giving us our pets
who are our friends and who bring us so much joy in life.
Their presence very often helps us get through trying times.
Kindly bless my pet.
May my pet continue giving me joy and remind me of Your power.

The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called "The Rainbow Bridge" because of its
many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge,
there is a land of meadows, hills and
valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm Spring
weather.
Those old and frail animals are young again.
Those who have been maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.
But there is only one thing missing.
They are not with their special person who
loved them on earth.
So, each day, they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up.
The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one runs from the group.
You have been seen.
When you and your special friend meet,
you take him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again.
