Feast Day - St. Hugh of Lincoln
Today is the feast of St. Hugh of Lincoln. You can read more about him at the picture source link. What was interesting and pertinent to this blog is the fact that he had a great affection for children and animals. In fact, as you can see in the above picture, he is often portrayed along side his pet swan. This swan acted as his "watch dog".

Feast of St. Martin de Porres
"...When [Saint] Martin died at the age of sixty, November 3, 1639, the grief of all in Lima and the surrounding country was terrible to behold. Only the knowledge that Martin was now in heaven and only the numerous miracles worked at his tomb were able in some measure to assuage their sorrow. Perhaps, after a while, they began to understand that Martin's mission of kindness, now that he was in Heaven was to assume word-wide extension..."
Prayer to Saint Martin
Most humble Martin of Porres,
whose burning charity embraced not only thy needy brethren.
but also the very animals of the filed, splendid example of Charity, we hail thee and invoke thee!
From that high throne which thou dost occupy,
deign to listen to the supplications
of thy needy brethren that,
by imitating thy virtues, we may live contented
in that state in which God has placed us and
carrying with strength and courage our cross,
we may follow in the footsteps of Our Blessed Redeemer and His most
afflicted Mother, that at last we may reach
the Kingdom of Heaven through the merits of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
Invocation Prayer to Saint Martin de Porres
In the name of the Most Holy Trinity,
In the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,
In the name of Mary, Queen of Heaven,
In the name of Joseph, Patron of the Universal Church,
Saint Martin cure (help) me (him, her)
For the honor and glory of God
and the Salvation of souls.
Amen.
Invocation to be said when applying the Blessed de Martin relic, picture or medal to the sick, or when held in the and by those who are in need.

Another Patron Saint of Animals - St. Nicholas of Tolentino
Shared by Mary Jane.
Today is the feast of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, who had a great love for the Holy Souls. He would offer Mass, pray and do penance for them so they could more quickly enter Heaven. Because many Catholics have forgotten about the souls in Purgatory, except when November 2nd - All Souls Day - comes around, St. Nicholas can teach a valuable lesson.
Let us pray for our dearly departed loved ones today and ask St. Nicholas to remember them. Prayer is below.
Patronage:
Souls in Purgatory, animals, babies, boatmen, dying people, mariners, sailors, sick animals, watermen
Souls in Purgatory, animals, babies, boatmen, dying people, mariners, sailors, sick animals, watermen
Prayer to Saint Nicholas
O God, source of strength and courage,
you gave your beloved preacher,
Saint Nicholas of Tolentino,
the conviction of faith to the very end.
Grace us with the ability
to translate your teaching into action,
remain patient amid hardship,
serve the poor and those who suffer,
and live as your true and faithful
servants.
Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, pray for us.
Prayer for the Deceased by Saint Nicholas Lord, God of holiness and light. You do not allow any shadow of darkness or evil in your sight, and so in your mercy you grant to those who have left this world burdened with sin,
a time of purification, applying to them the spiritual treasurers of your holy Church. Hear my prayer and through the merits of Christ, the Blessed Virgin, the saints, and all your faithful people bring to an end this time of waiting for our beloved dead, especially _____. In your providence you have chosen Saint Nicholas as a special intercessor on behalf of the departed.
Hear also his fervent prayer for those whom I recommend to you through his intercession. Amen.

New Patron Saint of Animals - St. Benedict
![]() |
St. Benedict |
Today Holy Mother Church celebrates the Feast of St. Benedict. He is known as the father of western monasticism. He is very well known for his miraculous jubilee medal. and for his rules for daily living.
Interestingly, he is also known for helping domestic animals. It would be a good idea to pin the St. Benedict's medal on your pet's collar or cage. The following is from the EWTN page:
"...Even domestic animals have been visibly aided by it when infected with disease."
So Happy Feast of St. Benedict everyone! He is now one of this blog's patron saints.
Prayer To St. Benedict
O glorious St. Benedict,
sublime model of all virtues,
pure vessel of God's grace!
Behold me, humbly kneeling at thy feet.
I implore thy loving heart to pray for me (and my pet N_______) before the throne of God.
To thee I have recourse in all the dangers which daily surround me.
Shield me against my enemies, inspire me to imitate thee in all things.
May thy blessing be with me always, so that I may shun whatever God forbids
and avoid the occasions of sin.
Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces of which I stand so much in need, in the trials, miseries and afflictions of life.
Thy heart was always so full of love, compassion, and mercy
towards those who were afflicted or troubled in any way.
Thou didst never dismiss without consolation and assistance any one who had re-course to thee.
I therefore invoke thy powerful intercession,
in the confident hope that thou wilt hear my prayers and obtain for me the special grace and favor I so earnestly implore (mention it), if it be for the greater glory of God and the welfare of my soul.
Help me, O great St. Benedict, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to be ever submissive to His holy will, and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven. Amen.
Prayer is from EWTN and has been slightly modified in order that we can pray for our pets.

St. Anthony of Padua - Happy Feast Day!
This blog family owes a lot to St. Anthony. I can't begin to tell you how many pets have been found thanks to him! Mahalo nui loa St. Anthony! Those of you who have been personally helped by St. Anthony should consider offering up St. Anthony's bread for the poor. St. Anthony's Bread on the Feast of St. Anthony.
Happy Feast Day!
This is what St. Anthony wrote regarding the Cross:
St. Anthony, when you prayed, your stolen book of prayers was given back to you. Pray now for all of us who have lost things precious and dear.
Pray for all who have lost faith, hope or the friendship of God.
Pray for us who have lost friends or relatives by death.
Pray for all who have lost peace of mind or spirit.
Pray that we may be given new hope, new faith, new love.
Pray that lost things, needful and helpful to us, may be returned to our keeping.
Or, if we must continue in our loss, pray that we may be given Christ’s comfort and peace. Amen.

Thanks to Mary Jane for sharing the following:
TUESDAY: SAINT ANTHONY'S DAY
Tuesday is dedicated to Saint Anthony because of the many and astounding miracles which occurred on the Tuesday on which his body was laid to rest.
So numerous were these prodigies, as has been told before, that the somber funeral was transformed into a triumphal procession. It is said that no one invoked the aid of the Saint without obtaining relief. All returned to their homes comforted, praising God and saying: "This is the day the Lord hath made to Saint Anthony; let us be glad and rejoice therein."
Since that time the devout clients of the Wonder- Worker have dedicated every Tuesday to Saint Anthony as the day on which God was pleased to show forth the power of the Saint.
This pious custom gradually spread throughout the Catholic world. In Franciscan churches on each Tuesday, devotions were held in his honor, and faithful clients come to pay homage to him. Saint Anthony himself has chosen Tuesday as his own. He has obtained throughout the centuries countless favors, spiritual and temporal, for those who have honored him on that day.
The Church has set Her approval upon Tuesday as Saint Anthony's day by generous indulgences. A plenary indulgence is granted on every Tuesday of the year to all who receive the Sacraments and on that day visit a Catholic church where the Blessed Sacrament is exposed, and there pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.
A plenary indulgence is granted on each day of thirteen consecutive Tuesdays (or Sundays), once a year, to all who perform an act of piety in honor of St. Anthony, receive the Sacraments, visit a church or public oratory and pray there for the intentions of the Holy Father (Leo XIII, Mar. 1, 1898).

This is what St. Anthony wrote regarding the Cross:
"The Christian must lean on the Cross of Christ as the wanderer leans on his stick when he takes a long journey. He must be well etched in the minds and hearts of the Passion of Christ only because the word is derived from that source of life and peace, grace and truth. Let us turn our eyes to Jesus, our Lord nailed to the Cross of salvation to crucify our flesh to his Cross mortifying the senses; weep for the sins we have committed ourselves and those of our neighbor".Source

Patron Saint of Lost Animals - St. Felix of Nola
St. Felix of Nola is regarded as a martyr even though he was not put to death. He is regarded as a martyr because he endured everything for love of Jesus, especially much torture.
St. Paulinus of Nola once overheard a peasant praying at the tomb of St. Felix of Nola. He was praying because his oxen had been stolen and he wanted St. Felix to bring them back. "Restore these same animals. I shall not accept any others." When the peasant returned home he found all his oxen safely in their stalls. Since then he is venerated as the patron saint who finds and returns lost animals.
His feast day is January 14th.

San Martin de Porres

This very humble Dominican lay brother has become well-loved not only in his native Peru, wh ere he is referred to as "Fray Martin" or Brother Martin, but all over the world. It is his virtues of humility, obedience, gentleness and compassion that won the hearts of those in his own order. Let us try to imitate San Martincito's virtues and use his exemplary life as a model for our own lives.
Prayer
Martin de Porres,
faithful follower of Jesus Christ,
let us strive to imitate your examples of union with God through prayer
of universal love and offer sacrifice and joyful service of those in need,
especially those who greatly suffer physically or morally.
We rely on your kindness and sensitivity for the needy and we ask
dear brother, that you present to your friend Jesus Christ
our petition of help in our needs.
So be it.
Amen.
"...Martin's charity toward the poor and homeless was legendary. He cared for the sick and injured wherever he found them. He had a special ministry to African slaves. But he treated sick animals with the same devotion he extended to humans. Innumerable legends describe his service and communion with creatures of every kind..."

healing through St. Martin De Porres' intercession - feast Nov. 3 - NOVENA
![]() |
This old Peruvian holy card belonged to my dear father. |
During his life, St. Martin De Porres was a power intercessor for sick people whom he cared for; many were healed. http://www.martindeporres.org/ about.htm
Last year, I prayed a novena to St Martin De Porres asking for his intercession for the constant pain above my right knee, lasting almost a year. My doctor did not provide relief, neither did the chiropractor. Unless I stayed off of it or put ice on several times a day, the pain was there. During the time of praying the novena, I was seeing a physical/massage therapist. As I entered the office for a weekly visit, she noticed the way I was walking. It was determined that one leg was one quarter of an inch shorter. She prescribed a heel lift and the pain ceased!
NOVENA TO
SAINT MARTIN DE PORRES
Feast is November 3. Start Friday Oct. 26, for 9 days in a row, say:
Saint Martin de Porres,
your concern and charity embraced
not only your needy brethren,
but also the animals of the field.
You are a splendid example of charity;
we thank and praise you.
From above,
hear the requests of your needy brethern.
(Mention your request here...)
By modelling our lives after yours,
and imitating your virtues,
may we live content knowing that
God has looked favourably upon us.
Because this is so,
we can accept our burdens
with strength and courage
in order to follow
in the footsteps of our Lord
and the Blessed Mother.
May we reach the Kingdom of Heaven
through the intercession of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.

"St. Francis of Assisi Praying" by Joseph Légaré, Quebec 1825 |

"It is first to be considered that the glorious St. Francis in all the acts of his life was conformable to Christ the Blessed. And that even As Christ, at the beginning of his mission chose twelve Apostles who were to despise all worldly things and follow Him in poverty and in the other virtues, so St. Francis in the beginning chose for the foundation of his Order twelve companions who were possessed of naught save direst poverty. And even as one of the twelve Apostles of Christ, being reproved by God, went and hanged himself by the neck, so one of the twelve companions of St. Francis whose name was Friar John della Cappella, became a runagate and at last hanged himself by the neck.. Now these things are a great warning to the elect, and matter for humility and fear when they consider that none is certain of persevering to the end in God's grace..."

..."The first companion of St. Francis was Friar Bernard of Assisi, that was converted after this manner: St. Francis, while yet in the secular habit, albeit he had renounced the world, was wont to go about in meanest guise and so mortified by penance that by many the was held to be a fool, and was mocked and hunted as a madman and pelted with stones and filthy mire both by his kinsfolk and by strangers; but he, even as one deaf and dumb, went his way enduring every insult and injury patiently. Now Bernard of Assisi, who was one of the noblest and richest and wisest of that city, began to consider wisely concerning St. Francis and his exceeding contempt of this world and his long-suffering under injury; and that, albeit for two years he had been thus hated and despised by all men, yet did he ever seem more steadfast..."

Today is the feast of St. Therese, the Little Flower or St. Therese of the Child Jesus. She taught us how to become saints becoming little. Her spiritual childhood method of sanctity was for her an easy way of attaining Heaven. A simple way yet it was through that little way that she was named a doctor of the Church.
Apparently, her family had a beloved pet dog named "Tom". And thanks to a very good friend of this blog we can enjoy the following:

Feast of St. Anthony of Padua, one of our Patron Saints
Today is the Feast day of one of the most favorite saints there is, Saint Anthony of Padua. Here at this blog we often ask for his intercession in finding our lost pets. However, did you know that he was an eloquent preacher? Because of this gift, he is also one of the doctors of the Church. I would like to share with you the following story that appeared in the Little Flowers of St. Francis:
Dear Saint Anthony, for all the times you have interceded for us and helped us find our lost animals, we thank you!
Christ, the blessed one, was pleased to show forth the great sanctity of his most faithful servant St Anthony, and how men ought devoutly to listen to his preaching, be means of creatures without reason. On one occasion, amongst others, he made use of fish to reprove the folly of faithless heretics: even as we read in the Old Testament that in ancient times he reproved the ignorance of Balaam by the mouth of an ass.
St Anthony being at one time at Rimini, where there were a great number of heretics, and wishing to lead them by the light of faith into the way of truth, preached to them for several days, and reasoned with them on the faith of Christ and on the Holy Scriptures. They not only resisted his words, but were hardened and obstinate, refusing to listen to him.
At last St Anthony, inspired by God, went down to the sea-shore, where the river runs into the sea, and having placed himself on a bank between the river and the sea, he began to speak to the fishes as if the Lord had sent him to preach to them, and said: "Listen to the word of God, O ye fishes of the sea and of the river, seeing that the faithless heretics refuse to do so."
No sooner had he spoken these words than suddenly so great a multitude of fishes, both small and great, approached the bank on which he stood, that never before had so many been seen in the sea or the river. All kept their heads out of the water, and seemed to be looking attentively on St Anthony's face; all were ranged in perfect order and most peacefully, the smaller ones in front near the bank, after them came those a little bigger, and last of all, were the water was deeper, the largest.
When they had placed themselves in this order, St Anthony began to preach to them most solemnly, saying: "My brothers the fishes, you are bound, as much as is in your power, to return thanks to your Creator, who has given you so noble an element for your dwelling; for you have at your choice both sweet water and salt; you have many places of refuge from the tempest; you have likewise a pure and transparent element for your nourishment. God, your bountiful and kind Creator, when he made you, ordered you to increase and multiply, and gave you his blessing. In the universal deluge, all other creatures perished; you alone did God preserve from all harm. He has given you fins to enable you to go where you will. To you was it granted, according to the commandment of God, to keep the prophet Jonas, and after three days to throw him safe and sound on dry land. You it was who gave the tribute-money to our Saviour Jesus Christ, when, through his poverty, he had not wherewith to pay. By a singular mystery you were the nourishment of the eternal King, Jesus Christ, before and after his resurrection. Because of all these things you are bound to praise and bless the Lord, who has given you blessings so many and so much greater than to other creatures."
At these words the fish began to open their mouths, and bow their heads, endeavouring as much as was in their power to express their reverence and show forth their praise.
St Anthony, seeing the reverence of the fish towards their Creator, rejoiced greatly in spirit, and said with a loud voice: "Blessed be the eternal God; for the fishes of the sea honour him more than men without faith, and animals without reason listen to his word with greater attention than sinful heretics."
And whilst St Anthony was preaching, the number of fishes increased, and none of them left the place that he had chosen. And the people of the city hearing of the miracle, made haste to go and witness it. With them also came the heretics of whom we have spoken above, who, seeing so wonderful and manifest a miracle, were touched in their hearts; and threw themselves at the feet of St Anthony to hear his words. The saint then began to expound to them the Catholic faith. He preached so eloquently, that all those heretics were converted, and returned to the true faith of Christ; the faithful also were filled with joy, and greatly comforted, being strengthened in the faith.
After this St Anthony sent away the fishes, with the blessing of God; and they all departed, rejoicing as they went, and the people returned to the city. But St Anthony remained at Rimini for several days, preaching and reaping much spiritual fruit in the souls of his hearers.

Another Patron Saint for Animals - St. Joseph of Cupertino
![]() |
Saint Joseph of Cupertino |
The other day I finally watched the old movie The Reluctant Saint with Maximilian Schell. It was during the scene when the bishop visits that we see that St. Joseph of Cupertino loved animals, especially the stable animals. I won't give the scene away as I hope you will watch this delightful movie for yourselves.
The following are stories of this wonderful saint and his special connection to animals:
Along with this went a power over nature, over the birds and beasts of the field, surpassing even that of his Father, St. Francis of Assisi; and Joseph used his power playfully, as St. Francis used it. There was a convent of nuns not far from the monastery, where Joseph sometimes called for alms. One day, when they had been good to him, he told them with a laugh that in return for their kindness he would send them a bird to help them in their singing. The next time they went to office, in flew a sparrow by the window. All the time they sang he sang too, when the office was over he flew away again. And so it happened every day, morning and evening the sparrow was there, as regular as any nun. But one day a sister, passing him by, gave him a push 'with her hand; the sparrow flew out at once and did not return any more. When next Joseph came to the convent, the sisters told him that the sparrow was gone, but they did not tell him the reason.
"He is gone, and quite right," said Joseph; "he did not come to you to be insulted."
However, he promised he would make amends to the sparrow; and in due time he appeared again, and joined in the office as before.
But that does not end the story of the sparrow. He would become so familiar that the nuns could play with him; one of them tied a tiny bell to his foot. All went well till Maundy Thursday; on that day he did not appear, nor during the rest of Holy Week. When Joseph called on Holy Saturday to receive his Easter offering, they told him the sparrow had gone.
"No wonder," answered Joseph, "I gave him to you to join in your music; you should not have made him a bell-ringer. Bells are not rung during these days of Holy Week. But I will see that he returns."
And he did. The sparrow returned, and did not leave again so long as Joseph remained in the neighborhood.
"...One Saturday Joseph went to the chapel as usual, and found not a soul there. It was harvest time; shepherds and villagers were out in the meadows and had forgotten to tell him that that day they could not come. Joseph, knowing nothing of the reason, talked to himself about the fickleness of men in the service of God. As he spoke he looked down the valley in the distance. The sheep were in the fields, but there were no shepherds; only a few children to tend them. Joseph raised his voice.
"Sheep of God," he cried, "come to me. Come and honor the Mother of God, who is also your Mother."
Immediately the sheep all around looked up. They left their pasture, leaped over hedges and ditches, formed themselves into orderly companies, and gathered round Joseph at the chapel door. When all were assembled, Joseph knelt down and began:
"Kyrie eleison."
"Baa," answered the sheep.
"Christe eleison."
"Baa."
"Sancta Maria."
"Baa."
And so it went on till the litany was finished. Then Joseph stood and blessed his congregation; and the sheep went back to their pastures as if nothing unusual had happened..." Source of the foregoing EWTN
