Update on Shorty the Dog and Question

From Diane:
she's home, but weak and thin! Need to get her strong! Don't want to lose her! Any advice for caring for a animal after surgery?
If any of you have suggestions on caring for a very weak, elderly dog following surgery, please advise! Mahalo!

  1. Hi Diane,

Great news that you puppy is home...he will improve just by being back with you!

Trying to think of a few helpful things. There is a medication called mirtazapine which is quite helpful with nausea and stimulating the appetite. Look it up and ask your vet tomorrow.

Feed him small meals...easy to digest proteins....Greek yogurt, boiled chicken, eggs, cottage cheese, brown rice...oatmeal.

If his stools are loose or he is constipated, canned pumpkin regulates. Just a teaspoon or so at a time. Look for canned pumpkin, not canned pumpkin pie.

I am sure he will sleep a lot as his body heals.

Will keep praying for Shorty and you...God bless you both!

  2. Continued prayers for precious Shorty!! It looks like our very special fellow prayer warrior, Kristina, gave you some excellent advice, God Bless Kristina!!
I, too, would imagine Shorty may nap and rest a lot but that is certainly when healing occurs and strength is restored.
Also, being back home with you!
I wonder if there are any nutritional supplements your vet may recommend at this time, too?
Love, prayers, and positive healing thoughts continue for your Shorty, God Bless you all!
Blessed Francis Seelos, St. Jude, St. Francis, St. Roch, and Our Lady, please hold Shorty in your comforting healing embrace at this delicate time - restore her strength, may her surgical incisions heal beautifully, and may she recover fully in the love of her family. Thank you for your blessings to date!

  3. Hi again Diane,

Just learned of this supplement. http://www.wysong.net/products/pdg-dog-cat-supplement.php

I am dealing with a somewhat similar situation and this is a way to increase appetite, put on weight without changing from the foods a dog is used to and likes. It has all kinds of good stuff in it in a powder form. You will find other info on other sites on it too. I learned this from a pet store owner who works with holistic vets.

We're starting it today and I wanted to let you know...all the best for you and Shorty!
